玉米烙 Fried Corn Pie
Pinyin: yù mǐ làoFor all the corn lovers out there this dish is a must try. It's quite simple as you can see. The corn is fried somehow that it sticks together and turns out a lot like a cookie. A few peas are added just for good measure and the chef tops it off with a little mayonnaise or salad dressing.
The dish is most certainly vegetarian but its hard to say it's healthy. It's not really an appetizer but its not really a complete dish either. I order it from time to time just cause I like it. Its got the sweetness of the corn with a rather unique form factor.
I highly recommend this dish if you've got company coming from out of town who might not appreciate some of the more authentic Chinese food but still want local food. It's safe both cause it's vegetarian and you can see it's only corn and it's sweet so most Western palates will appreciate it. It's also relatively easy to eat with chopsticks, or even hands if chopsticks prove too difficult. I'm guessing kids will love this one too!

I'm not a big fan of this dish... especially with the mayo.
Corn tends to show up in the strangest places in Chinese food. Peas are often kicked in as well.
During a big, multi-dish meal, the 'Corn Pizza' is often brought out just before lobster or roast pork or other great dishes - and really seems out of place.
Must have come from a KFC menu in its early days in China.
Corn also turns up on the streets, with cobs boiling in pots on street corners, pedestrian walkways on bridges and in the odd convenience store. Old and tasteless usually. All this corn, yet no nachos!

My husband and I are big fans of dish though. We are native Chinese and left China for about 5 years. Last year, when we came back and had dinner with my college friends, they ordered this! Wow...it feels to me that Chinese chefs are getting more creative!
I agree with your recommendation that this is a dish to serve people from out of the town and might not really appreciate authentic Chinese food.
@feds: For Cantonese, corn aslo goes to the soup. But I don't like it.

Hmmm~~looks delicious!
I'm going to Hangzhou to visit a friend during the May Day Holiday. He said he would take me to have Yumi Lao.I've no idea what it is, and guessed it must be some pancake made of corn powder(like Jianbing). haha I'm wrong.
At least it is so beautifully made. I cannot wait to have a taste!
Thank you^^
